Did you know the pizzelle is an “old world” traditional cookie? This Italian waffle cookie gets its name from the Italian word, “pizze”, meaning round and flat. It is believed to have first been developed in central Italy to honor annual celebrationsin ancient times. They have
remained an important part of celebrations throughout Italy and even in the United States.
The two holidays which
the pizzelle is commonly used are Christmas
and Easter.
It is believed pizzelles were first used in the Italian village of Colcullo to celebrate the driving out of the snakes from overtaking the town. Others believe the village of Salle was the first to use pizzelles to celebrate the feast of Beato Roberto, a twelfth-century monk.
Pizzelles of the past were made on irons embossed with the family crest or other symbols of meaning. They were baked
individually on these irons which were held over the top of an
open flame. Today, as then, pizzelles are still embossed but with a waffle
pattern on one side and a floral pattern on the other. Although Anise
is the “traditional” flavor of the pizzelle, we’ve taken the flavor experience
to a new level. With over 50 flavors to choose from, we strive to satisfy the
most discriminate of taste buds!
So, if someone ever asks you the “million-dollar-question” about pizzelles…now you know!
